All writing is creative to a certain degree but traditionally creative writing is defined as a specific form of writing which goes beyond professional, journalistic or technical writing. Poetry, drama, novel, short stories, personal essays and even some non-fiction fall under the category of creative writing. Writing for the screen and stage too may be termed as forms of creative writing.
There is in fact a very thin line between creative and professional writing since it is not unconceivable that writing can be both professional and creative at the same time. So a fixed definition of the category of creative writing seems difficult. It may be better termed as original writing and in this respect it is much more modern and can encompass many different forms within its fold.
Creative Writing Courses
Academically creative writing courses focus mainly on teaching students how to write fiction with emphasis on poetry, stories and drama. Nowadays teaching screenwriting and playwriting is also in demand. While such courses of course teach the technical aspects like editing, structural techniques, genres and other such tools for good writing, the main emphasis is on self expression. To write creatively is to express one’s ideas and feelings in unique and imaginative way. In creative writing the writer has a lot more freedom as the strict rules of grammar and punctuation are often not followed.
However, the students are taught the rules of correct grammar even if only to help them break those rules later. To break rules it is imperative that one knows the rules first. Creative writing is taught mainly in workshop format where students have to present original work for critique of their peers. Through writing and rewriting students develop their own writing method and style. Criticism by their peers helps the student to understand his/her limitations and strengths better.
So how does one begin? Here are some tips:
- Read novels, stories, newspapers, blogs, magazines and anything you can get your hands on.Readingalone will not make you a good writer but it’s the first step.
- Write in small burst. You cannot expect that your first try will be a novel. In the beginning write whatever comes to your mind and carry a notebook always to note down your thoughts and observations. Make it a point to write down something everyday even if it’s a few sentences.
- Don’t worry about getting it all right at the first go. All writers go through a painful process of rewriting and correcting before the final result. All writers need to revise and edit their work numerous times.
- Even though creative writing does not always follow the rules of grammar strictly it is important to know the rules of correct writing. Getting enrolled in a course or workshop may be a good idea as it will provide the basic foundations in developing your own unique style.
- Do not forget to have fun while writing. Creativity and passion go hand in hand. Writing should never become a chore.
While structured courses and writing tips can help hone your skills better and improve your writing they cannot make up for lack of talent. If you have a flair for writing then go ahead and follow your dream.
